Good stuff except the part about the Knicks. Somehow the Knicks get the worst of both worlds. They are either just good enough not to get one of the top 3 picks or they trade it away so they can't acquire a star that way and they have no cap space to get a premier free agent. You also forget to mention that NY is more attractive than most other cities. The Knicks problem was that they seem content on being mediocre (ironically not even acheving that) instead of just admitting they suck, blow it up and start from scratch.

Lebron's Nike deal does not include a trade kicker of that magnitude. There is a bump for playing in LA or New York, but not for $100 million. HIs whole contract is only for $100 million.

Should I say, most likely going nowhere? I will agree that these side deals can have an effect. I'll admit that I was not aware that he already had that in his contract with Nike. Most of the time we hear how somebody will come to NY for the minmum because of some nebulous "endorsement opportunities". When I hear this, I laugh because I've heard it all so many times.

The cap rules were different when Shaq left Orlando for LA. Under the latest CBA, the total package Orlando could offer would have been larger than the deal from the Lakers. Despite that Shaq still would have had greater opportunities to earn income on the side in LA.

But there are downsides to coming to the big city too. Lebron is a huge star in Cleveland. In NY he becomes just one of many. If you don't win a ring here, the sharks tear into you. Differant story in Ohio.

Welcome Thomas and good point on the cap changes since the 1996 Shaq signing.

Steady, WOW! my head must have been buried in the sand because i did not know about that LBJ Nike $100 million kicker. Of course, tith that information, then it really doesn't matter if the Knicks are under the cap in 2010. Lebron can either sign long-term at the mid-level exception or sign a one year contract and re-up for big bucks...

Thomas Vogler:
You can't be so definitive about LBJ and what may happen at the end of his time in Cleveland, saying he "ain't going nowhere". You may have misssed the first instance of "beef" between the once famous Peter Vecsey and IT last year. Vecsey came out after the Draft and scooped IT saying that the drafting of Mardy was to appease LBJ's agent who promised to deliver him to the NYK when his time came up. Then we find out that the deal LBJ has with Nike includes a $100 million kicker if he plays in NY or LA. With that kicker, a player can play for the league minimum or the MLE and still get his. That scenario in NY, where there are 8 million stories, does not sound far-fetched to me. The hypocrites in the media who booed the Mardy and Balkman selection are now praising the depth that they provide to the NYK side. What say you about the NY hat on LBJ during the Yankee game in Cleveland? More innocent smokescreen. You will know here that I do not covet OTPs but I can always improve my side when the opportunity comes.
Lastly, Vecsey writing that story about the ownership deal nullified in Detroit was probably the last straw between Vecsey and IT.
