Peaceman, great to have you stop by. Ewing always had trouble with Smits because of his height. Ralph Sampson too. He relied on shooting over people so Smits altered his game. It was just one of those style.matchup things. …as for the finger roll, everybody forgets that he had a phenominal game up to that finger roll. They also forget that the Knicks were down 3-1 in the series when Ewing hit a series saving shot at the end of Game 5. They also forget that would have to face Shaq and Orlando in the next round which was no gimme before the finals… but that’s just my opinion.

Jones, I think that David West is a great example… actually the whole Hornets team. If the Hornets were white we would hear about then every hour on the hour how they maximize their talent…

Speaking of Favre, he already has been replaced by Tyler Hansborough as the token “White Athlete That The Media Openly and Embarrassingly Fawns Over Because of His Work Ethic and Love For the Game.” (Note: Steve Nash was the overwhelming favorite here until Hansborough too over during the tournament.) For anyone who doesn’t think there’s a racial component to this, you’re crazy. Just look at David West of the Hornets — like Hansborough, he’s a self-made player and a staunch competitor who plays with an inordinate amount of passion, an undersized forward who routinely scores on bigger bodies, someone who extracted every ounce of his potential and made the most of it. Well, have you ever read a David West feature? Have you ever heard announcers raving about him to the point that you wondered if they were related to him? No and no. I just think it’s a little, um, peculiar. We’ll see if this changes during the NBA playoffs.

I was writing about college. In college, Ewing contested every shot, attempted to grab every rebound, and as the middle man in the 2-3 zone, he was very active from the free-throw to the base-line.

Guys, Ewing did have a Great work ethic, but Ewing did take nights off on the defensive end! We’ve all seen Ric Smits abuse him for 35+ in many games! That weak azz finger roll instead of a dunk in game 7 against the Pacers…cost us the Chip that year! Now if you say Bill Russell never took a night off…..that would be “PURE.”

Good stuff as usual. When I heard the Bilas quote, I thought I was dreaming. I thought Bilas is trying to draw attention to himself by saying something so ridiculous, ala Vitale. Heck in the college game I do not believe that I saw anyone compete as hard as Pat Ewing. He never took a play off, but hey that’s just my opinion.

Regarding Hansbrough, he has short arms and measure out at 6:7, w/o the athlectic ability to guard guys on the floor. Also I do not believe that the pro referees will ignore his blatant fouls as they do in college. He’s a Mark Madsen type at best.
