“Book of Isiah”: Reflections & Responses on Thomas

Blog comments from around the web on The Book of Isiah: Unraveling the Biggest Myth in Sports

(many more specific comments at end of article)

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. The link you provided was fascinating, compelling, surreal, and simply extraordinary….I read everything and it confirmed for me that I am not CRAZY…The bias is off the chart… Commenter from “The Knix Fix" Blog

  • “I looked at it yesterday and read to about the 2 paragraph and closed the link down. EPIC, COLOSSAL, ATROCIOUS, ABOMINABLE, DISGUSTING, LOATHSOME, DETESTABLE, ABHORRENT, MONUMENTAL, IMMENSE, piece of crap IN THE HISTORY of message board linking. – Commenter from Ultimate Knicks

  • I’m impressed with that website. They come from a different angle, something uncommon in today’s media. There are some things I disagree with but at least it opens your mind for food for thought. Thanks for da Light ! ProSportsDaily.Com

Sorry for the inactivity the last few days, but free time has been spent responding to emails, message boards, and bloggers with regard to the most recent series: The Book of Isiah: Unraveling the Biggest Mess in Sports. For many, the series received all kinds of extreme love and added validation to what they already believed, for many others the series was simply an act of blasphemy; and for a third audience – it gave them reason to pause and think more closely about what they get fed by the mainstream sports media (MSM). It is the third group, represented by third quote, that COSELLOUT wishes to reach the most. Readers can disagree with this point here and that point there, but simply cannot debate that MSM has reported terribly on the performance of Isiah Thomas. And that should trouble everybody.

In any case, the article series has resonated more than anything else that COSELLOUT has ever produced. While previous COSELLOUT articles such as ESPN’s Rap Sheet, Sports Illus-hatred of Barry Bonds, and The Myths of 756 all achieved considerable web circulation and critical praise, this multi-part series “The Book of Isiah” set new records by distancing our previous high mark for views by the thousands. And while we have written far more socially important articles like the recent Jim Crows Children (Jena 6), it was the passion in how many fans have feelings toward Isiah’s performance that is most surprising.

SOME REFLECTIONS:

Some Thanks: To DeadSpin and The Big Lead for giving “The Book of Isiah” and our voice some greater legs. Thanks to all of the various Knicks blog sites (see below) that picked up the series; and to all those who showed some love, OR thoughtful criticism through their emails, comments, and message boards. And always thanks to my favorite blogs “The Starting Five” and “StopMikeLupica” who make it feel less lonesome in speaking truth to the power that is our mainstream sports media.

A Side Note in My Mind: Although the alternative-sports-universe of media websites and blogs have a great range of diversity in its coverage, it is my belief that publicly bickering amongst ourselves is counterproductive considering the magnitude of the monster that is ESPN and other mainstream sports media giants. That is my way of saying that COSELLOUT will never issue an article that is critical of any other sports alternative website, no matter how much we disagree with what has been presented in a given article. If something is troubling enough, they will receive very respectful public critique or a very disrespectful private email! While COSELLOUT has never specifically experienced this personally, it sees it self as part of a larger connected cause that need to maintain its focus on holding the mainstream media giants accountable. But I digress.

KNICKS BLOGS: Despite nearly 10,000 views, very few people left comments, however, many discussed the topic elsewhere. As a die-hard Knicks fan AND a blogger, there is probably no good reason that I have barely visited or was even fully aware of the various blogs of wildly passionate fans on the New York Knicks. I am now. The “Book of Isiah” series made for interesting discussion around the Knicks blog circuit. Sites like The Knix Fix , Pro Sports Daily (Knicks), Ultimate Knicks, Knicks City, Knicks4Life, and others discussed the article[1] with various reviews. It was also picked up for discussion by Real GM Basketball. And while I was extremely impressed with the entire website at RealGM and the level of commentary on multiple stories, I was unable to activate my registration for whatever reason, and my requests for log-in assistance have not yet yielded a response. Since many referrals came from RealGM, I am hoping that someone reads this and fixes the problem!

“The Knix Fix”: Allow me to repeat the footnote that was added to "The Trades: Turning Weatherspoon into Wine": “While I have come across many solid Knicks blogs over the last couple of days, perhaps none was more impressive than the New York Newsday’s "The Knix Fix". The commenters on the blog flat out know their Knicks. Fair warning: If you decide to engage, you better do your homework first, otherwise we suggest that you go back and play with the other kids in the sandbox known as the ESPN Conversation comments section.” To their credit a commenter pulled my coattail to a factual error in the article “The Trades: Turning Weatherspoon into Wine” so we amended the article accordingly while citing the source. COSELLOUT does not have the luxury of a highly paid crack editorial staff, so we depend on our readers to assist us with our ideal goal of fairness and accuracy.

About COSELLOUT: Now you might be surprised that a more mainstream blog like New York NewsDay’s “The Knix Fix” written by a fine mainstream Knicks sportswriter (Alan Hahn) was chosen. Well we want to make something very clear about COSELLOUT. This website is NOT anti-mainstream sports media. It is PRO responsible media, pro-responsible commentary, and pro-media accountability. The only reason this website even exists is because so many of the big dogs are more interested in selling their papers and pleasing their advertisers than actually doing their job. … does anyone believe that during the Larry-Brown-Isiah split that Larry “play the right way” Brown as villain was going to sell more papers than Isiah as villain? Or that Stephon Marbury’s downright legendary community service is what folks will pay to read when we could slam him about a free-spirited-television interview or consensual sex instead? And that is why we get so much garbage, so much misinformation, and so many “Cosellouts” in mainstream sports media that chase the dollar while ignoring their craft. Nobody wants my sports-writing salary (currently… $0 an hour). But there is also good in mainstream media and COSELLOUT acknowledges that it probably has not done enough to highlight that point. As it relates to the Knicks, The New York Times and New York Newsday provide the most insightful and balanced coverage. But I digress again:

“The Isiah Riders”: I was just introduced to this clever term this week by pedsdmd from ProSportsDaily.com Some “Isiah Riders” are simply afflicted to the point of no return and this is why: For many, Thomas is being judged against a standard of perfection and without context to the team that he took over. This affliction can lead to statements like this these:

  • On Drafting: "If he’s such a good judge of talent, why not think that he could’ve come out with even better studs with higher [draft] picks?" – commenter from Ultimate Knicks

  • On Trades: “Of course Crawford is more valuable then Mutombo and [Othella] Harrington. Does that mean it was the right move to make? Absolutley not. How do you know another GM wouldn’t have parlayed those 2 guys into a better player? You dont.”…– commenter from ProSports Daily

Now we’ve already stated the case why Isiah is the best drafter in the entire NBA, and he has managed to draft better for the Knicks in the last 3 years than the previous 14 years of Knicks drafts. Sorry Zeke. Not good enough….  In the second quote, the Crawford trade gets chastised because another GM just might have pulled off a Kobe heist if he were just able to make a better pitch on Othella. Hey, you just never know! …The bottom line is that many “Isiah Riders” judge each draft pick, each trade, and each transaction against an ungodly standard: perfection. With the bar set this high, we are assured of two things remaining: Isiah will always lose, and haters will always hate. The good news is that the “Isiah Riders” have inspired the creation of an upcoming chapter article called “The Isiah Rules”. So a special thanks goes out to all the haters for that moment of clarity!

The other common flaw expressed from many of the "Isiah Riders" is that they keep citing the Knicks won-loss record the last three years instead of the development for future title contention. Isiah Riders tend to fall into the classic real estate trap by judging a potential new home for what it is, than what it could become. I have little doubt that this will mark a major transition year in that development. In any event, thank you all for discussing this article series.

Finally, let’s take a look at various comments from the blogosphere:

First we start with some comments from “The Knicks Fix” whose many comments were highly complimentary and expressed validation:

1) “The Knix Fix”:

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. The link you provided was fascinating, compelling, surreal, and simply extraordinary….I read everything and it confirmed for me that I am not CRAZY…The bias is off the chart…

  • “You need to get your book published man!! I’ve been saying this for a while! Your illustration of the 1997 draft is excellent! Isiah is a DRAFT GENIUS!!

  • “Kudos to Modi who took time and effort to present an accurate portrayal of Isiahs accomplishments. After all alot of us including me started Knick blogging because we were pissed at the media and wanted to get this point across.

  • “The link you provided was fascinating, compelling, surreal, and simply extraordinary….I read everything and it confirmed for me that I am not CRAZY…The bias is off the charts”

“I thought I was the one losing my mind, when all around me I’m seeing how terrible a GM Isiah is. After reading some of the info on your site, I felt whole again. Great stuff.

Now we move on to Ultimate Knicks where the reviews came in a tad less glowingly:

2) Ultimate Knicks [aka: “Isiah Rider” Central]; The Comment Section:

First, a friendly warning upon log-in:

  • “MODI, be forewarned that there are about 8 hardcore Isiah/Knicks haters on this board that will have a hard time admitting Isiah has ever done anything right. – COSSUCKS

[warning is ignored…]

  • “I looked at it yesterday and read to about the 2 paragraph and closed the link down. EPIC, COLOSSAL, ATROCIOUS, ABOMINABLE, DISGUSTING, LOATHSOME, DETESTABLE, ABHORRENT, MONUMENTAL, IMMENSE, piece of crap IN THE HISTORY of message board linking."

  • “This is a plain awful source of misinformation. Half of what was written wasn’t even true… A site which claims that ‘Isiah Thomas’s trading record is overwhelmingly positive’ is on the brink of being one of the most ridiculous pieces of junk I’ve ever seen”.

  • “M.O.D. I. Marbury’s Organization Defending Isiah

  • “Stalin would be proud of this propaganda.”

  • “actually, you have just stimulated some compelling debate. That alone is a very good thing.”

…hey, good thing I didn’t send them my "Matt Millen the Magnificent" article! … after that compelling stimulation, REALGM swings it back the other way… for the most part

3) REALGM

  • "This book really needs to be published and promoted!"

  • "very good read. he makes some great points using facts not opinion."

  •  "Hater repellent."

  • "Definitely the best article written on our situation. Hope all the Isiah hating fools on this board take note!"

  • - "Extending Isiah’s contract last year was a huge mistake, he ran the Raptors into the ground…"

…Knicks City & Knicks4Life come in with mixed reviews…

  • “Looking at each trade might expose some mistakes made by Thomas. However, looking at where the Knicks are NOW compared to where they were THEN, it’s like night and day.”

  • “LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL is that what you think is going on in MSG under Isiah he’s been acquiring young talent for a future championship run. That’s just laughable. I would take apart your statement but just like that website your living in LaLa if you think Isiah has any plan.”

  • That site is full of great stuff… I’m glad someone took the time to put all that together in to cold hard facts. Some people on this site and the media especially really need to read that over.

  •  excellent article MODI. You have made a lot of very good arguments

  •  its one thing to say Isiahs been treated too harshly its another to call him a "tremendous gm" …lets put the pipe down…

  • I probably fall into the Isiah basher camp, but melodrama aside (Biggest myth? c’mon now) that site was a very interesting read.

…and ProSportsDaily comes back mostly favorable with a notable exception…

6) ProSportsDaily.com (Knicks)

  •  “Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! That’s what I’ve been screaming!!! I could feel that but I could NEVER articulate it like my man at that site did. I could pin point a bunch of things but never as clever and thorough as they did. Anybody that doesn’t see that is now just DUMB. If they read it, they could no longer say they are just ignorant. That was beautiful

  • "Required reading for Isiah haters"

  • “This was a great reading for me and it was soooooo true. I am glad a writer final got it right.”

  • “Not impressed. Just a bunch of spin and opinion. You can shoot down every one of those points very easily. Bottom line is the team has been awful since he’s been here and that’s a fact. … for anyone to say he has done a great job since he’s been here is totally ridiculous and asinine”

    …and the grand finale…

  • – “Isiah is a poopy head!"

    Hey MODI

    WHAT UP!

Just dropping by to show some love. Its hard to keep a hater free environment alive and well.

I followed some of the links you provided above and find that you are trying your best teaching the errors of the “Isiah Riders” way… Its a fruitless endeavor my brother.

    The haters hate
even when things are going their way. Knicks in 2008!

When you get a chance, come chill at the Fix where your open mind and search for truth is encouraged and appreciated.

“The Ewing treatment is a very sore spot with me. I know of no superstar in ALL of sports who got so little love from their home press who gave so much of himself.”

I’d like to see a “MODI” style piece on that. Just a thought.

    Jimmy Says:

I have been defending Isiah Thomas on the AOL Knicks postboard for 3 years. If I didn’t know any better, I would say you just re-wrote everything word for word. My defense of Stephon Marbury and Isiah Thomas have been met by ridicule from many who don’t know squat about the salary cap nor basketball for that matter. I commend you and I wish I had thought of doing something like this. Isiah Thomas gets a terrible rap. Too bad the media makes fools of those who are not intelligent enough to see how they have been snowed.

    MODI Says:

Jimmy, since I wrote it I have gotten a number of responses like yours. It is almost impossible to break throught the wall of our biased media. Thanks for your words and feel free to spread the word of the Book of Isiah link on your AOL message board. I can’t imagine it worse than a couple of other “Isiah Rider” message boards that I’ve been on…
