Emmitt Smith on Barack Obama
ESPN’s Jeff Pearlman wrote an article this week on voter apathy amongst athletes (hat tip to Signal to Noise). Pearlman interviewed players on the Texas Rangers… however, he did not interview Emmitt Smith. In this Obama-introductory hype job by Emmitt, his conviction shines. Whatever the exact opposite of "apathetic" is, Emmitt’s got it. And he obviously doesn’t care if Republicans buy throwback jerseys, too. Hat tip to The Black Quarterback (via Awful Announcing) on the video. Since Pearlman has a history of writing about how mindless athletes are, here’s to hoping a future column champions some of our more politically active athletes and ex-athletes — even if it includes Curt Schilling!

Pearlman also does a major disservice to sports writing by categorizing every athlete in these good or villain boxes. Even his John Rocker expose which made him famous was a terrible column. A better writer could have included all the bigotry, but rounded the profile out beyond a caricature. Pearlman sees only good or bad, but real writing attempts to make you see the complexities in between.
